Abstract: Nanotechnology is one of the emerging technologies of the 21st century. It is an interdisciplinary science domain with potential applications in biotechnology, computer science, electronics, communication, medical and food, energy production and new materials. It has generated wide interest and its impact on society is expected to be huge. Innovative aspects of such new technology have important implications for the economic growth of the nations. It has received much global interest and many national governments are making large investments in nanotechnology research and development (R&D) activities. The present paper is an attempt to explore the nanotechnology R&D in the area of energy, water, health, food and agriculture sector in India. It also highlights the outcome of nanotechnology in the publications and patent numbers, institutional players in nanotechnology policy in India and the environmental, health and safety issues of this emerging technology. The information and data have been collected from publicly available sources and cited accordingly.
